The How and Why of Weed Burning

Weed Burning FAQS and Benefits

How does Weed burning work?

No weed, bush, or grass thrives in the presence of fire. Once you have knocked them down by cutting or burning, the best time to tackle them is when they start to regrow from their residual energy. Burning disrupts their photosynthesis cycle, and by repeatedly breaking this cycle, their energy dissipates, preventing the plant from growing.

WBK03 Weed Burner Australia weed burner in use.

Pictured: the WBK03 in action, note the Short Wand – Long Flame technology means that minimal bending is required and that it is more ergonomic on your forearm and back.

A FULL 9 Kg gas Cylinder weighs 17.5 Kg approx, and is difficult to lug around, two things here to note. If your terrain is reasonably flat a trolley (as shown) is a great way to move your gas cylinder around I find using the 2 mt hose versions WBK03 & WXT03 are best when using a trolley as it is not good for hoses to be dragged along the ground and they also want to catch on anything they can.

Alternately if your terrain is unsuitable for trolley use then the 4 metre hose versions WBK04 & WXT04 are better for placing your cylinder in one spot and working the area around, hose extensions are also available.

Why is your weed burner wand shorter than other types on the internet?

The Shields weed burner range all use short wand – long flame technology, this is far more ergonomic than other brands and so much easier on you. Watch the video we explain why.

Weed Burning FAQS and Benefits

THE ADVANTAGES OF WEED BURNERS:

Weed burning, also known as weed flaming, offers several benefits and advantages over traditional methods of weed control. Here are some key points:

  1. Chemical-Free: Weed flaming does not involve the use of herbicides or other chemicals, making it an eco-friendly option that avoids soil and water contamination.
  2. Immediate Results: Flaming kills weeds on contact, providing immediate results, unlike some chemical treatments that may take days or weeks to show effects.
  3. Versatility: This method can be used on a wide range of surfaces, including gravel paths, driveways, garden beds, and between pavers, making it highly versatile.
  4. Reduced Soil Disturbance: Unlike mechanical weeding, flaming leaves the soil structure intact, reducing the risk of erosion and damage to nearby plants.
  5. Safe for Plants and Vegetables: When used correctly, flame weeding is safe for the surrounding plants and vegetables, as it targets only the weeds and does not leave toxic residues.
  6. Cost-Effective: After the initial investment in a weed burner, the ongoing costs are relatively low compared to purchasing chemical herbicides regularly.
  7. Non-Selective Control: Flame weeding can kill all types of weeds, regardless of their resistance to herbicides, making it an effective option for dealing with herbicide-resistant weeds.
  8. Sustainable and Organic: It aligns with organic gardening practices, providing a sustainable weed control method that supports organic farming and gardening.
  9. Reduces Weed Seeds: High temperatures can kill weed seeds on the surface, potentially reducing the number of weeds in future growing seasons.
  10. Minimal Labor: The process is quick and requires less physical labor compared to manual weeding, especially for larger areas.
  11. Safety: When used properly, flame weeding is safe for the operator, with no risk of exposure to harmful chemicals.

Precautions

While flame weeding has many advantages, it’s important to take certain safety precautions:

  • Avoid Dry Conditions: Do not use weed burners during dry spells to reduce the risk of accidental fires.
  • Control Flames: Keep the flame away from flammable materials and dead plant matter that might ignite.
  • Protective Gear: Wear appropriate protective gear to ensure safety while operating the equipment.
  • Proper Training: Ensure proper training and understanding of how to use the equipment safely and effectively.

Overall, weed flaming is a highly effective and environmentally friendly method of weed control that can be an excellent addition to sustainable gardening and farming practices.

SHOU-SUGI-BAN, ALSO KNOWN AS YAKISUGI WHATS THAT ABOUT?

Shou-sugi-ban, also known as Yakisugi, is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation. This technique involves charring the surface of wood planks. The process enhances the durability and longevity of the wood while providing a distinctive, aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Key benefits and characteristics of Shou-sugi-ban include:

  1. Durability: The charring process makes the wood more resistant to weather, insects, and decay.
  2. Fire Resistance: Ironically, the charring process also makes the wood more fire-resistant.
  3. Aesthetic Appeal: The wood gains a unique, textured appearance that can range from a light char to a deep, blackened finish, enhancing its visual appeal.
  4. Low Maintenance: Once treated, the wood requires minimal maintenance compared to untreated wood.
  5. Sustainability: This method is eco-friendly as it avoids the use of chemical preservatives and paints.

Traditionally, Shou-sugi-ban was used for siding, fencing, and other exterior applications, but it has gained popularity in contemporary architecture and interior design for its striking appearance and sustainable qualities.
