WHY IS YOUR WEED BURNER WAND SHORTER THAN OTHER TYPES I SEE ON THE WEB?

The Shields weed burner range all use short wand – long flame technology, this is far more ergonomic than other brands and so much easier on you. Watch the video we explain why.

You can try this at home.

Pictured: the WBK03 in action, note the Short Wand – Long Flame technology means that minimal bending is required and that it is more ergonomic on your forearm and back.

A FULL 9 Kg gas Cylinder weighs 17.5 Kg approx, and is difficult to lug around, two things here to note. If your terrain is reasonably flat a trolley (as shown) is a great way to move your gas cylinder around I find using the 2 mt hose versions WBK03 & WXT03 are best when using a trolley as it is not good for hoses to be dragged along the ground and they also want to catch on anything they can.

Alternately if your terrain is unsuitable for trolley use then the 4 metre hose versions WBK04 & WXT04 are better for placing your cylinder in one spot and working the area around, hose extensions are also available.

HOW DOES WEED BURNING WORK?

Weed burning is the act of passing a flame over a weed briefly, heating the plant tissues enough to kill them.
The aim is to heat the weed sap until it expands and ruptures the cell walls of the plant, destroying the plant tissue so the weed dies, not to scorch or burn the weed. Once the heat destroys the cells in any section of the weed’s stem, water and nutrients cannot reach the leaves and the weed dies.

ARE WEED BURNERS OR FLAME WEEDING SAFE?

Absolutely, it is safe for both the operator and the environment. Flame weeding and the use of weed burners is completely safe when you use the equipment properly. In fact, it is a safer alternative to traditional weed killers as it doesn’t involve harsh chemicals that can burn skin, contaminate groundwater and leave toxic residue on the plants and vegetables in your garden. You’ll need to take a few safety precautions however – don’t weed during dry spells, and keep the flame away from dead material that might ignite.

CAN I USE A WEED-BURNER ON FIRE BAN DAYS?

As the weed burner has a naked flame you are not allowed to use them on Fire Ban days.

CAN I USE A WEED-BURNER FOR BACK BURNING?

All back-burning needs to be carried out by trained professionals so these should not be used for any sort of back-burning activity.

SHOU-SUGI-BAN, ALSO KNOWN AS YAKISUGI WHATS THAT ABOUT?

Shou-Sugi-Ban, also known as Yakisugi is a Traditional Japanese method of charring timber with fire. The process forms a carbon layer on the exterior of the boards which protects the timber and reduces the maintenance. Shields weed burners are ideal for creating this age old finish to timber.
